Why does Massachusetts Need
Election Day Registration?
Election Day Registration is a straightforward, secure, and proven reform to increase turnout and strengthen our democracy by eliminating arbitrary deadlines that prevent eligible voters from participating.

Across the U.S., 23 states and D.C. have Election Day Registration, including our neighbors in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. It’s past time to modernize Massachusetts elections with this common-sense reform.

Voting YES on Question 4
Â
-
Improves turnout
-
Many people don’t get interested in elections until the last week, when candidates step up mailers, ads, and door-to-door engagement. By then, it’s too late to register in Massachusetts.
-
Question 4 enables people to register at the polls on election day with identification and proof of residency.
-
Â
-
Increases voter confidence
-
Under current rules, registered voters who have moved, changed their names, been shifted to ‘inactive’ status, or face some other hitch at the polls can cast a provisional ballot — but those can take days or weeks to be verified and they are often rejected for technical reasons.
-
Question 4 enables people to re-register on the spot with ID and proof of residency so they can cast regular ballots that they know will be counted.
-
Â
-
Reduces the burden on elections officials
-
Question 4 would all but eliminate the tedious and time-consuming work of cross-checking provisional ballots against voter rolls

Election Day Registration will strengthen our democracy!
It’s a proven and time-tested reform. All kinds of states have implemented it successfully: red, blue, and purple, large and small, urban and rural. Some have had it in place for more than 50 years. It’s a straightforward, secure, and proven way to boost voter turnout and streamline elections administration without adding costs.
